All lined up together, a "city" of various sized darumas=Dairokuten Temple

The Daruma City, an annual end of the year tradition, was held on the 27th at the Dairokuten Temple in San-Chome, Jukkenzaka, Chigasaki City. Daruma of various sizes were lined up, as locals packed the area to purchase them for use in the New Year.

According to the temple, the annual event began over 50 years ago. This is said to be the only place to find a "daruma city" within Chigasaki. This year, 10 daruma stores from Hiratsuka City gathered for the event, also selling shimenawa decorative ropes and household Shinto altars.

To sell their Darumas, shopkeepers struck flint stones while dancing and yelling out "Yoooiyoi!" as they prayed for safety in their homes and success in business.

As a family of 6 approached the shops, a local female (age 65) said with a smile "Even though I buy lucky amulets at the super markets, I still shop at the daruma city each year. I wish to pray for the health of children as I decorate with them."

"Pepper" demonstrates his ability to instantly sniff out and react to illegal drugs=Yokohama Customs

A new ally has joined the narcotic detection dogs of Yokohama Customs: Pepper, a 19 month old male Labrador retriever. Debuting in September, at both Yokohama Customs' Kawasaki Overseas Mail Sub-Branch and the Yokohama International Passenger Terminal, he proudly uses his nose to defend against the inflow of illegal drugs into Japan.

On the 3rd, a public demonstration was held. Instantly detecting the smell of illegal drugs hidden in a travel suitcase, he alerted his handler with a "Sit" pose.

This was the first time Pepper was deployed on the job to the Yokohama Area. Acting as a 'Luggage Search and Correspondence Dog,' he sniffed around the luggage of arriving passengers. He was named pepper with the wish: "That his nose would instantly detect illegal drugs as if they smelled of pepper."

October is the month when control over illegal narcotics and handguns is strengthened. Working as Pepper's handler, customs official Kubo Mao (age 32) said: "He's used to people and the location. Now work is like fun to him, just what we expected."

A fishing union member pulls up a net of Wakasagi fish=Lake Ashi

On the 1st, at Lake Ashi in Hakone-machi, the gillnetting ban on Wakasagi fish was lifted. The first day's catch totaled 29 kilograms (64 pounds). "The fish appear small, however this is what we expected," said Nozaki Shigenori, President of the Ashinoko Fishery Cooperative Union.

On that day, members of the fishing union entered Lake Ashi on boats before dawn, having set up nets the night before. The silvery scales of the 12-13 centimeter fish danced inside the nets as they were hauled up from the boats.

In recent years, it's said the intense heat has caused a tendency for the fishing season to be delayed. "The results have been more successful, as their are a lot of fish (in the lake). We're expecting to reach last year's average of 3 tons," said the union. A portion of the catch will be blessed at Hakone Temple and then sent as an offering to the Imperial Household Agency.

The full moon could clearly be seen above Yokohama's Bay Bridge.

Clearly visible as it lit up and moved though the evening sky, a full, mid-autumn harvest moon occurred on the 19th. After dusk, the moon began to climb the sky faster than the sun could set. At 5:48PM, it colored the sky above Yokohama Bay Bridge in Yokohama Port. As the night sky sparkled more brightly with the ascent of the moon, cameramen’s shutters in Nishi-Ku, Yokohama City's Rinko Park repeatedly clicked, capturing the moment.

The next chance to see a mid-autumn, full harvest moon arrives 8 years from now in 2021.

Passing down their experiences, 4 victims hold a lecture about the day of the atomic bombings/Yokosuka

Mr. Kusumoto, second from the right, discusses the tragedies of the war=Yokosuka City's Lifelong Learning Center

"'Not forgetting that day,' listen to experiences from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings" was held on the 5th, at Nishihemicho, Yokosuka's Life Long Learning Center. Organized by Misawa Sachiko, a representative of the Auschwitz Group of Kanagawa, the event featured talks from victims of the bombing .

4 men and women injured by the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki discussed their experiences, including Kusamoto Mitsuo, office president of Nagisa-Kai , the Yokosuka branch of the prefecture's atomic bombing victims group. Murayama Keiko (age 77) lived 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) from the bombing site and was 6 years old at the time. Suffering from chronic diarrhea as an effect of the radiation exposure, she was able to treat it with medication. A number of years after the bombing, her younger brother died with a high fever from unknown causes. Her mother passed away as well from cervical cancer. "Think of the effects of atomic bombs," said Murayama. On coming into contact with radiation leakage from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi reactor: "It's possible that even the land is emitting effects of the incident," she worried.

After their experiences were shared, the victims exchanged opinions and thoughts with 15 of the lecture's participants. Nuclear reactors, constitutional revision and peace education were discussed. "If Article 9 of the Constitution is revised, we could turn into a country at war. Now is the crucial time that we must raise our voices in objection," pleaded Kusumoto.

9 lectures are planned for this year. "As the victims advance in age, there is no limit to how many times we would like to have them come speak again in the years ahead. It's serious that their stories are passed down for the future, emphasized representative Misawa. As of March, 2,001,700 bombing victims are still alive. Last year, more than 9000 people passed away.

In a five-variety kodaimai rice patty in Yuno-Cho’s Oosaku area, a giant frog appears in the field!

The image of a frog floats over the rice field.

In a rice field in Yakuno-cho's Oosaku area, a giant frog has appeared. Amongst the five different varieties of kodaimai rice, the field serves as a canvas from which the frog can be floating on top of the "rice crop art". Each day the colors change, forming a nice display.

The Imoyama Club, a group of local nature and hiking enthusiasts went to work on creating the artwork. Led by the group’s president Iio Koyo, 50 members assembled. Enjoying rice cultivation, they became involved in exchanges with the city and its farming villages in 2006.

Until now, the group took on the task of creating bears, UFOs, and (local town character) Goya-Sensei. With the area being known as a spot to view scenes of the fall, each year, more and more people come from far away to pay a visit.

Planting took place on a 9-are wide rice field owned by President Iio. With this year marking the 50th anniversary of the organization, a frog was chosen through a public vote. With not enough members being recruited by the end of May, friends as far away as Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara called out for assistance, resulting in 70 people offering their cooperation. Ropes were laid down and stretched to form the outline image of the frog. From there, seeds of red, black, green, purple and habutae varieties of godaimai rice were planted.

Despite worries of the lingering intense heat causing a lack of hydration for the plants, growth was favorable, with the image beginning to appear one week ago.

"The growth of the red godaimai rice was slow. Looking at the weather from here on out, I think mid-September will be the best time to come see the crop. On the 22nd, people will be arriving to harvest the rice and plan to hold a harvest festival," said President Iio.

Fisherman Yuu Yamamori pulls up one octopus vase after another=Miura City

The peak season for Octopus fishing has arrived. Using the ancient method of octopus vases, the octopi are caught by taking advantage of their habit of concealing themselves within rocky areas.

During the day, in the Kaneda fishing harbor area of Miura City, an octopus fishing boat floats on the calm ocean. There, fisherman Yuu Yamamori (Age 80) pulls a 15 meter rope up out of the water. Attached to the rope are 25 octopus vases, which likely have octopi inside half of them.

Octopus fishing usually begins in mid-July, but this year the season arrived about a month later than average. There were plenty of medium sized octopi brought up, weighing about 1 kilogram (2.20 pounds) each. "The octopi are healthy and have eggs. Things will get delicious from here!" Mr. Yamamori said with a smile.

The Toya Lion Dance.

On the 10th, a tradition continuing over 300 years took place at the Suwa Shrine of Toya, Midori Ward, Sagamihara. There, the Toya Lion Dance was performed in a religious dedication.

The dance depicted a family of a father, mother and son. Dancing to the sounds of a flute, 3 people covered in white robes and lion masks performed, their heads twisting concurrently to the music.

The Toya Lion Dance began during the Japan's Kanbun Period (1661-73), to be later appointed as an intangible cultural asset of the prefecture. Local high school students took on the task of performing as the lions.

On the July 1st, for the first time in two and a half years, American Red Squirrels have been put on display at Yumigasaki Zoo of Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki. Because of their charming behavior, they've quickly become popular.

On display is Kantaro (male) and Catherine (female). Both are 8 inches long and about 15 months old. With reddish-brown backs and white bellies, both of them are said to energetically move around their home.

The same zoo has already been caring for and displaying American Red Squirrels. However, in November of 2010, their last squirrel passed away, making the squirrel house an "empty home".

According to the zoo, Kantaro is "a little quiet," and Catherine is "shy around strangers". Zoo Director Masaki Kazunari added "Seeing how they act really is cute. We'd definitely like people to come and watch the squirrels run around."

A Japanese Tree Frog looking out from the mouth of a sake bottle.

At the coffee shop Izamu (managed by Kishiwada Hizae) located in Oecho Arita, Fukuchiyama City, a Japanese Tree Frog has made a home out of a sake bottle that was being used as a storefront flower vase. Sometimes peeking out from the mouth of the bottle, his cute behavior has become a topic amongst customers.

The 6" long sake bottle was being hung from a pillar at the entrance to the store, formerly a warehouse. Last year was when the frog first made the bottle his home, leaving mid-summer. This year, he was said to have come back around March.

The frog is about 1.2 to 1.5 inches long. During the day he stays inside the sake bottle. However if the temperature gets too high, he peeks out to cool himself.

"With the frog using the space, it looks like we won't put any flowers into the sake bottle. When he pops out for a bit and our eyes meet, he doesn't even flinch in the slightest. It's really cute," said Kichiwada (64).

Until moving to the next location, the frog will be spending some time silently watching over the area.
