Nissan's Miniature Electric Cars to be made available for testing in Central Yokohama/Kanagawa

Miniature electric vehicles, available for trial.

From the 19th, Nissan Motors will be testing their Miniature Electric Cars (EVs) in the Central Yokohama area. By participating in a questionnaire, local residents and visitors will be able to rent the cars, free of charge. Nissan aims to take the results and issues raised in the questionnaire into account before introducing it into the marketplace.

The mini-EV has a body length of 234 centimeters (7.6 feet) and can accommodate 2 passengers across the front and back. It travels up to 80 kilometers an hour (50MPH) and can travel 100 kilometers (62 miles) off a full charge, which takes 4 hours. Though current traffic laws do not allow the car to be driven on public roads, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has granted permission for the car to be driven in the East Yokohama Station, Minato Mirai 21, Kannnai, Yamate and Motomachi areas.

Until January 31, 2013, users will be able to drive the vehicles for 3.5 hours per day. Vehicles can be loaned out from Nissan's global headquarters (Takashima, Nisha Ward, Yokohama City), the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (Japanese site) (Shinko, Naka Ward, Yokohama City) and the Yamashita-cho underground parking garage.

Applicants being sought are regular, everyday drivers who have received a normal driver's license at least 3 years prior. The registration homepage is located at http://nissan-rentacar.com/yokohama/. At a later date, drivers will in advance be issued a reservation for membership cards.

試乗が可能となる超小型EV

日産自動車の超小型電気自動車(EV)が19日から、横浜都心エリアで試乗可能になる。地域住民や観光客らに無料で貸し出し、アンケートを利用者に実施。効果や課題を検証し市場への導入を目指す。

超小型EVは、全長234センチで前後2人乗り。最高速度は時速約80キロで、4時間の充電で約100キロ走る。現行法では公道を走れないため、国土交通省が許可した横浜駅東口、みなとみらい21、関内、山手・元町エリア限定で走ることができる。

2013年1月31日までで、利用可能時間は1日最大で3時間半。日産グローバル本社(横浜市西区高島)、横浜赤レンガ倉庫1号館(同市中区新港)、山下町地下駐車場で貸し出す。

利用対象者は普通自動車免許取得後3年以上を経過し、日常的に運転している人など。ホームページ(http://nissan-rentacar.com/yokohama/)で会員登録し、後日発行の会員カードで事前予約をする。

Baloomination: Balloons sway and fall while changing colors=Zou no Hana Park

Energy saving LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are used to light up Yokohama's harbor town during the evenings during the Smart Illumination Yokohama event. Until the 4th, displays are open at Zou no Hana Park, Yamashita Park and the Nihon Odori Station.

The city attempted to fuse both art and illumination, said the committee sponsoring the event. The artists include students of Yokohama City University, Yokohama College of Art and Design and others.

Balloons toppled and swayed as they changed colors (“Baloomination”), bicycles powered-up light displays, rings of light illuminated from oval shaped lanterns and more. Visitors enjoyed themselves while taking part in the experience.

都市観光とアートを融合させる試みで、実行委員会主催。アーティストのほか、横浜市大、横浜美大などの学生らも参加している。

バルーンを揺らしたり、倒したりすると色が変わる「バルーミネーション」や、自転車をこいで発電し、卵形の照明を点灯させる「0(zero)」などを来場者は実際に体験し、楽しんだ。

At Katsuradai Municipal Junior High School, students are educated in an earthquake simulator=Sakae Ward, Yokohama City

In Yokohama City, an earthquake simulator is used to experience the trembling of earthquakes on a magnitude of 4 to 7 degrees, allowing people to be educated on safely dealing with the situation. In 2010, the event was held 379 times, which 36,818 people experienced. In 2011, because of the amount of city employees dealing with the Eastern Japanese disaster, the number of events slightly decreased to 363 that year. However, citizens had a high interest, with 42,566 experiencing the simulator.  

Yokohama is a trend setter for the entire country, putting the first machine in service in 1975. 4 machines are presently in operation. While broadcasting a video of a severe earthquake scenario that relays practical disaster advice, the trembling of the Great Kantō and Great Hanshin earthquakes are reenacted.

On the 3rd of March, the earthquake vehicle was at the Katsuradai Municipal Junior High School of Yokohama's Sakae Ward for an educational event. A boy who experienced the feeling of a 7 degree earthquake commented "I felt like my head was going to be torn off.” The city's disaster defense office added "This is a chance for people to consider how they would handle themselves during such a time."

市立桂台中学校で行われた起震車による啓発活動=横浜市栄区

横浜市は、震度4~7度の揺れを体験できる「起震車」を使った防災の啓発活動に力を入れている。2010年は379回、3万6818人が体験。11年は市職員が東日本大震災の対応に追われたため、回数は363回とやや減ったものの、市民の関心は高く、4万2566人が体験した。

横浜市は全国に先駆けて、1975年に1台配備し、現在は4台ある。大地震を想定した啓発ビデオを流すなど、防災の指導も可能で、関東大震災、阪神大震災の地震の揺れも再現できる。

今月3日には、横浜市栄区の市立桂台中学校で起震車による啓発を行った。体験した男性は「頭が持っていかれる感じがした」と震度7の揺れを実感。市消防局は「自分の身に起きたときのことを考えるきっかけにしてもらえれば」と話していた。

Japan's largest floating signpost (left) is removed and replaced with a new floating style lantern structure=Tokyo Bay

On the 19th, the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters removed the country's largest buoy (The Naka No D Floating Lamp Post) from the northernmost shallows of Tokyo Bay, replacing it with a new structure.

Raised from the sea's surface, the buoy measures at 10 meters high with a foundation diameter of 10 meters. Including the anchored weight at the bottom of the sea, it weighed in at 212 tons. It was set up in 1979.

The new lantern stands at 12 meters. Differing from the one before, it is not fixated by a long chain at the bottom of the ocean. Because of that, the chances of it waving about and drifting off are slim. It's said to be more effective as a route point for establishing width.

The floating style lanterns completely fit within the standards of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. The 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters has been working to exchange buoys since 2003. There are 209 navigation markers within Tokyo Bay. The The Naka No D Floating Lamp Post is now the 81st marker to be switched to floating style lanterns.

第3管区海上保安本部は19日、東京湾の浅瀬北端の目印となる国内最大のブイ「中ノ瀬D灯浮標(とうふひょう)」を撤収し、浮体式灯標を設置した。

引き上げられた灯浮標は海面から高さ約10メートルで、土台部分の直径は約10メートル。海底に沈めた重りを含め総重量212トンで、1979年に設置された。

新設された灯標は海面から高さ約12メートルで、従来のものと異なり、重りに固定する際に長い鎖を使用しない。そのため、標識の振れ回りや流失事故の恐れが少なく、航路幅を有効に活用できるという。

浮体式灯標は国際航路標識協会の規格を満たしており、同保安本部は2003年から交換工事を実施。東京湾内にある209基の航路標識のうち、今回の設置を含めて81基が浮体式に切り替わった。

This photo (2010) is of Tamagawa College's "Future Sci Tech Lab" set-up. Plants such as lettuce and herbs are grown through the use of LED technology. Plants are cultivated with the lowest possible cost light source, luminous LED panels. The combined use of LED panels, hydroponic equipment and control systems are researched to discover how to obtain optimal results.

Responding to consumer's demands for peace of mind and safety from food, Tamagawa College and Nishimatsu Construction will begin growing lettuce in a plant factory from October of this year. The areas affected by the disaster of Eastern Japan are planning to adopt the system of this new farming business model and use it in their economic revitalization, with farming being central to the area's recover plans. This system is also being proposed and implemented outside of Japan.

On January 17th, both companies concluded a contract to be used as the basis for their dealings with each other. Currently under construction is the TAMAGAWA-NISHIMATSU Produce-Plant Factory, a 2 story building covering 900 square meters (9688 square feet). Set up in the facility are such facilities as a clerical office, administrative office and practice/training room, with power being supplied by solar energy panels.

Professor Watanabe Hiroyuki of Tamagawa University's agricultural department began development of the factory in 2009. Applying for a patent in direct-cooling high powered LEDs, he hopes to adopt them for use in the hydroponic cultivation system. Compared to the methods of sunlight and fluorescent lamps, the lighting system is said to make available products of exceptional efficiency and quality.

By October, 600 hundred heads of lettuce will be grown per day. After 2 more years, additional production equipment will be added, which have the ability to grow produce besides lettuce and yield a scheduled total of 3900 crops per day. "Between high value added produce from the energy conservation techniques, designs for efficiency in the manufacturing process and dividing the water, lighting and heating expenses by 2 to 3 times, we're hope to go towards conquering the issue of profitability," said Takayuki Endo, from the Real Estate Home Office of Nishimatsu Construction's New Project Promotion Section.

The manufactured produce will first be made available at Tamagawa Academy's student dining hall and is later planned to be sold at small stands in the surrounding area of the academy.

玉川大学と西松建設が「植物工場」事業化へ-農業ビジネスモデルの構築目指す

玉川大学は2010年に「Future Sci Tech Lab」(写真)を建設。レタスやハーブなどのLED栽培技術の確立、植物栽培光源用の低コストな実用的高輝度LEDパネルの開発、LEDパネル光源・水耕栽培装置・栽培制御システムの組合せの最適化などの研究成果をあげた。

「食の安心・安全」に対する消費者ニーズに応えようと、玉川大学と西松建設は今年10月より、植物工場でリーフレタスの生産を始める。新たな農業ビジネスモデルを構築し、東日本大震災における被災地の産業復興策、農業を中心とした地域活性策として、広く国内外に提案・実現する。

両者が1月17日に締結した「産学連携に関する協定書」に基づく取り組み。建設中の植物工場「TAMAGAWA-NISHIMATSU Produce-Plant Factory-」は地上2階建てで、延べ床面積は約900平方メートル。事務所、管理室、実習講習室などで使う電力を賄う太陽光発電システムを備える。

工場では、玉川大学農学部の渡邊博之教授が2009年に開発し、特許出願中の「ダイレクト冷却式ハイパワーLED」を使用する植物水耕栽培システムを採用。太陽光や白色蛍光灯で栽培した場合と比べて、格段に生産効率や生産物の品質を向上させることができるという。

リーフレタス600株を日産するシステムを10月に稼働。2年後に生産設備を増設して、レタス以外の作物も生産可能な日産3900株システムを稼働させる予定。「高付加価値な作物を省エネで効率的かつ計画的に生産することで、生産コストの2~3割かかる用水光熱費など収益性における課題を克服していきたい」と西松建設開発・不動産本部新規事業推進部の遠藤隆之さん。

生産した作物は、玉川学園の学生食堂をはじめ、玉川学園周辺の地元小売店に販売する予定。

On February 5th, the "Dream Waking~Industry Experience for Children" event was held at the public park of Odawara Castle's outer citadel. Sponsored by the Children's Department of the Odawara and Hakone Commerce and Industry Assembly (of the Odawara Hakone Business Newspaper), the event was crowded with many parents and children.

For children to safely have fun, various job experiences were created for the event. The day before, the city's enterprise office held an event for such things as soba noodle and kamaboko creation. On that day, 16 types of "experience bases" were available. Children could learn painting, how to create monaka, and experience selling dried goods and other food items.

In addition to the construction vehicles a collection of 40 racing and custom cars were on display. Police cars, fire trucks, Japan self-defense forces vehicles and more were also on display, waiting to be boarded by the children.

There was a long line to enter the baskets of vehicles made for working in high places, such as fire trucks and freeway under bridge inspection vehicles. Work uniforms were prepared for kids to wear and take souvenir pictures in, capturing many parents and their children enjoying themselves.

NEXCO中日本の「橋梁点検車」に乗り込む子どもたち

小田原城二の丸公園で25日、「ドリームワーキング~子どもたちの職業体験~」が開かれ、多くの親子連れでにぎわった。主催は小田原箱根商工会議所小田原青年部。(小田原箱根経済新聞)

子どもたちが安全で楽しみながら、さまざまな仕事を体験できる同イベント。前日は市内の事業所でそば打ちやパン作り、かまぼこ作りなどの体験を行った。当日も16種類の子ども体験ブースを用意。子どもたちはペンキ塗りやもなか作り、干物やかまぼこの販売などを体験した。

ほかにも、「はたらく車」やレーシングカー、カスタムカーなど約40台が集まり、警察・消防・自衛隊の特殊車両などの展示・乗車体験も行われた。

はしご車や高速道路の橋梁点検車など高所で作業をする車両の先端(バスケット)の搭乗体験には長い行列ができた。用意された子ども用の制服を身に着けて記念撮影を楽しむ親子の姿も多く見られた。

On January 12-15, at the Hitachi Civic Center (Saiwai Town 1, Hitachi City Telephone 294-24-7711) the returned capsule of space probe Hayabusa will be on display.

The Hayabusa was the spacecraft used for the world's first asteroid sample return mission, as part of the plan to recover a sample from the asteroid 25143 Itokawa. It returned to Earth in 2010, where the bulk of the craft burned upon entry into the atmosphere. However, the 40 inch diameter sample capsule was able to be recovered without damage.

Attached to the civic center is a planetarium showing a film of Hayabusa, where young children receive a deeper understanding of their relation to outer space.

Museum hours are 10:00AM to 7:00PM. Free admission. 

Prices for the Hayabusa film: Adults: 510 Yen, Elementary and middle school: 310 Yen, Young children: Free. 

Film times on weekdays: 2:30PM and 4:00PM. Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays: 11:00AM, 1:00PM, 2:30PM, 4:00PM. Open until January 29.

日立シビックセンターで「はやぶさ」の帰還カプセルが展示される(イラスト=池下章裕)

日立シビックセンター(日立市幸町1TEL0294-24-7711)で112日~15日、小惑星探査機「はやぶさ」の帰還カプセル展示が行われる。

「はやぶさ」は世界初の小惑星サンプルリターン計画の一環としてイトカワのサンプル採取を行い、2010年に帰還。はやぶさ自体は大気圏突入で燃え尽きたものの、直径40センチのカプセルは無事に回収することができた。

併せて同センター天球劇場では「HAYABUSA」を上映。青少年に宇宙への関心を深めてもらう。

開館時間は10時~19時。入場無料。「HAYABUSA」上映は大人=510円、小中学生=310円、幼児無料。上映時間は平日=1430分・16時、土曜・日曜・祝日=11時・13時・1430分・16時。今月29日まで。

Slot Car Racing appears inside the New Yokohama Ramen Museum

In the New Yokohama Ramen Museum (Yokohama City, Kōhoku Ward, New Yokohama 2nd Ward), a slot car racing circuit is now open on the first floor gallery.

In the museum, a 1960's working class neighborhood reappearers out of thin air, containing famous ramen branches from throughout the entire country. Presently, for the masses of younger generations (1970-1980's)  who've passed and yearn for that time period, all sorts of themes and designs from the 60's are on display.

At that same time, slot car racing toys were very popular. Super cars on a scale of 1 to 24 or 1 to 32 would be inserted into a slot (ditch) to be raced. The car moves via a motor inside, powered by electricity running through the slot. A hand controller is used to adjust the amount of electicity during the race.

At the museum, a giant slot car racing circuit has been prepared. 8 meters wide, 30 meters total length, and a varying depth of 70 centimeters. Rental slot cars can be enjoyed. In addition, a plastic model shop has been established, which includes copies of models no longer in production. Approximately 3000 slot cars are for sale,  from 2000 yen. Original car designs are able to be produced.

Manager of public relations, Mr Takigami Masaki, commented: Slot car racing is a splendid taste. It's a way for an individual to tune up cars that they love. In a car that's only available in one make across the entire world, you can be the one to race it.

Slot cars can be raced for 200 Yen per 5 minutes. Admission fees for the museum:  Middle-schoolers and above=300 Yen,  elementary schoolers and seniors (older than 60) = 100 Yen, pre-elementary schoolers pay no admission.  Business hours vary according to the day.

新横浜ラーメン博物館内にスロットカーレーシング登場

幅8メートル、全長30メートル、高低差70センチの巨大なスロットカーレーシングのサーキットを用意した

新横浜ラーメン博物館(横浜市港北区新横浜2)1階ギャラリーに現在、スロットカーレーシングのサーキットが展開している。

「昭和33年の下町」を再現した空間の中に全国の有名ラーメン店が出店する同館。現在は団塊ジュニア世代が子ども時代を過ごし「懐かしいと感じる」1970~1980年代(昭和40~50年代)をテーマに各種企画を展開している。

スロットカーレーシングは同時代に流行した玩具で、24分の1や32分の1のスーパーカーがスロット(溝)のついたコースを走るもの。内蔵のモーターはスロットに電気が流れることで動き、手元のコントローラーでその電気の量を調整して走らせる。

同館では幅8メートル、全長30メートル、高低差70センチの巨大サーキットを用意。レンタルのスロットカーで遊べる。そのほか、併設のプラモデルショップでは絶版模型も含めた約3000点のスロットカーを販売(2,000円~)しており、オリジナルカーを作ることもできる。

広報担当の瀧上正樹さんは「スロットカーレーシングの醍醐味(だいごみ)は、憧れの車を自分仕様にチューンアップできるところ。世界で一つだけのマイカーを走らせてみては」と話す。

スロットカーレーシング走行は5分200円。同館の入場料は、中学生以上=300円、小学生・シニア(60歳以上)=100円、小学生未満無料。営業時間は日によって異なる。

The pioneering spirit exists in a corporate museum. The Toshiba Science Museum (Kawasaki City, Saiwai Ward, Komukai Toshiba Town) introduced scientific/technological industrial culture, and is now upon the 50th anniversary of it's opening. On the 15th, Toshiba's founder, Tanaka Hisashige (1799-1881) had a commemorative display of his designs featured in the opening ceremony as the museum opened.

During the museum's opening in November, 1961, they commemorated the 85th anniversary that Toshiba was initially founded (Note: Tanaka Engineering Works was established by Tanaka Hisashige in 1875, which would go on to merge with Tokyo Electric in 1939, forming Toshiba). Products and science/technology connected with the company are on display. With school organizations and families across all classes widely and intimately connected with the company, a calculated total of over 8,700,000 have visited the museum. Lately, with the boom of industry tourists, the number of visitors is said to have further increased.



The design exhibit is titled "The Story of Tanaka Hisashige~passion and inexhaustible pursuit~." From the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate until the Meiji period, Hisashige sent out a number of inventions to the world, and was called "The Genius Machine Engineer". In 1875, in the Ginza Brick Town of Tokyo, he opened up business with a store and factory which became the origin of Toshiba.

The exhibit is displaying such inventions as the thousand year clock, karakuri dolls, replicas of steam powered vehicles, etc. The Edo period's most spectacular karakuri is the character writing doll. While skillfully controlling a brush, it's able to write the characters for "寿,Long Life" and "松,Pine Tree"

Toshiba's president, Sasaki Norio, said the following at the ceremony: "The Toshiba Science Hall interacts with as well as expands science and technology throughout the region. We will want to have more exhibits after this. For Tanaka Hisashige, the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate was a period of instability and an era of change, where people picked up where others left off and their daily living transformed. We want to constantly continue to receive the DNA of revitalization while being the world's first and best in our pursuit of technology."

The design exhibit is open until April 27th of next year. Closed on Sundays, Holidays and specific dates. The hall is open from 9:00AM until 4:45PM. Admission is free. For questions, the hall's telephone number is 044 (549) 2200.

東芝創業者の田中久重が発明した文字を書くからくり人形=東芝科学館

企業博物館の草分け的存在で、科学技術や産業文化を紹介している東芝科学館(川崎市幸区小向東芝町)が、開館50周年を迎えた。東芝創業者の田中久重(1799~1881年)にちなんだ記念企画展のオープニングセレモニーが15日、同館で開かれた。

同館は同社創業85周年記念事業の一環として1961年11月に開館。同社ゆかりの製品や技術などを展示している。学校団体や家族連れなど幅広い層に親しまれ、累計来場者は約870万人に上り、最近は産業観光ブームもあって来場者が増えているという。

企画展のタイトルは「田中久重ものがたり~情熱と飽くなき探求心~」。久重は幕末から明治期にかけて数多くの発明品を世に送り出し、「天才機械技術者」ともいわれた。1875年、東京・銀座煉瓦街に開業した店舗兼工場が東芝の起源になっている。

同展では発明品の万年時計やからくり人形、蒸気車模型など約100点を展示している。江戸期のからくり人形の最高傑作の一つである文字書き人形は、人形が筆を巧みに操りながら「寿」や「松」の字を書くことができる。

 東芝の佐々木則夫社長はセレモニーで「東芝科学館は地域交流とともに科学技術を広める場でもあり、今後も発展させていきたい。田中久重は幕末の不安定な時期に時代の変化を先取りしながら人々の暮らしを変えていった。われわれも脈々と受け継ぐDNAを活性化しながら世界初、世界一の技術を探求していきたい」と述べた。

The world's largest tsunami experimentation facility was installed by the Sea and Airport Research institution  (Nagase, Yokosuka city) on the 18th. On the general public opening, over two hundred local elementary students learned of the workings and destructive power of tsunamis.

In the constructed canal for large scale synthesized waves, the largest mad-made tsunami to occur was 2.5 meters high (184 meters long, 3.5 meters wide, and 12 meters deep). During the performance, secondary waves reached .5 meters high. The water rushed through corrugated sheets constructed out of iron, with the water level rising as the tsunami advanced.



Also, at the adjoined National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management, senior researcher Kentarō Kumagai, has made a new assumption regarding the Keichō earthquake of 1605. "Despite there not being a large amount of seismic activity, a tsunami did advance (Tsunami Earthquake), he explained.

世界最大級の津波実験施設を公開=横須賀

世界最大級の津波実験施設を備えた港湾空港技術研究所(横須賀市長瀬)で18日、一般公開があり、地元小学生ら200人余りが津波の仕組みや威力について学んだ。

最大2・5メートルの人工津波を起こせる「大規模波動地盤総合水路」(長さ184メートル、幅3・5メートル、深さ12メートル)では、高さ0・5メートルの津波を繰り返し実演。鉄製の「造波板」が水を押し込むと、水面が盛り上がりながら押し寄せた。

 また、隣接する国土技術政策総合研究所の熊谷兼太郎主任研究官が、県内沿岸部に最大の津波をもたらすと新たに想定された1605年の慶長地震について「揺れが大きくないのに津波が押し寄せる『津波地震』だった」と説明した。
