On the July 1st, for the first time in two and a half years, American Red Squirrels have been put on display at Yumigasaki Zoo of Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki. Because of their charming behavior, they've quickly become popular.

On display is Kantaro (male) and Catherine (female). Both are 8 inches long and about 15 months old. With reddish-brown backs and white bellies, both of them are said to energetically move around their home.

The same zoo has already been caring for and displaying American Red Squirrels. However, in November of 2010, their last squirrel passed away, making the squirrel house an "empty home".

According to the zoo, Kantaro is "a little quiet," and Catherine is "shy around strangers". Zoo Director Masaki Kazunari added "Seeing how they act really is cute. We'd definitely like people to come and watch the squirrels run around."

A Japanese Tree Frog looking out from the mouth of a sake bottle.

At the coffee shop Izamu (managed by Kishiwada Hizae) located in Oecho Arita, Fukuchiyama City, a Japanese Tree Frog has made a home out of a sake bottle that was being used as a storefront flower vase. Sometimes peeking out from the mouth of the bottle, his cute behavior has become a topic amongst customers.

The 6" long sake bottle was being hung from a pillar at the entrance to the store, formerly a warehouse. Last year was when the frog first made the bottle his home, leaving mid-summer. This year, he was said to have come back around March.

The frog is about 1.2 to 1.5 inches long. During the day he stays inside the sake bottle. However if the temperature gets too high, he peeks out to cool himself.

"With the frog using the space, it looks like we won't put any flowers into the sake bottle. When he pops out for a bit and our eyes meet, he doesn't even flinch in the slightest. It's really cute," said Kichiwada (64).

Until moving to the next location, the frog will be spending some time silently watching over the area.

A mother and her ducklings swim energetically.

At the springs of Imaizumi Park of Imaizumi, Hadano City, visitors were calmed by the sight of a Spot-Billed Duck family skillfully taking to the water, bathed in the early summer rays of light.

At the springs, the mother duck was seen accompanied with 10 chicks, following behind in 2 rows. The scene of the chicks skillfully swimming resembled a parenting school. As a Common Kingfisher bird revealed itself, the parent ducks appeared to be watching over the area with caution while assisting the chicks.

Nearby residents and families stopped in their tracks at the heart-warming scene. "Grow up healthy," they wished to the ducklings.

The disaster rescue dogs that participated in the issuing ceremony.

On the 21st, in the prefecture police headquarters of Yokohama Cities' Naka Ward, disaster rescue dogs went through an issuing ceremony to perform human rescue operations in disaster areas. 6 dogs were signed in for a 1 year period, starting April 1st. In the case that an earthquake or landslide occurs within the prefecture, they would help search for the location of missing persons.

6 dogs were collected, having passed testing from the International Rescue Dog Association with excellent results. The dogs came from 4 different breeds, including German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. At the issuing ceremony, Sudou Masahiko, Chief of Prefecture Police Crisis Management and Preparation greeted the attendees. "Further strengthening our cooperation, we hope to be completely prepared in responding to disasters." The dog's handlers received certificates entrusting the dogs into the police force.

Kanagawa Prefecture’s system of disaster rescue dogs was introduced to the police as they dealt with 1995's Great Hanshin Earthquake. Directly after the 2011 Great Disaster of Eastern Japan, 6 dogs were entrusted to the prefecture police of Miyagi to search for missing people. Murase Hidehiro, Board Chairman of the non-profit Rescue Dog Trainer's Association commented "Disaster rescue dogs are the first to arrive at a scene and are able to pinpoint the exact location of survivors." Emphasizing that point, he argued for the necessity of increasing the amount of rescue dogs within the country.
