The twin rock hyrax siblings, Elmo and Ace=Yumemigasaki Zoo, Kawasaki City

In the Yumemigasaki Zoo of Minamikase, Saiwai City, the rock hyrax twins were presented to visitors on April 28th. The smallest type of hoofed animal, their cute appearance has made them quite popular.

The Rock Hyrax is about the size of a large rabbit and lives in Southern Africa. They've been placed near the zoo's elephant and dugong enclosures.

Elmo and Ace were transferred from the Asa Zoo of Hiroshima City, where they were born in November of 2010.

A zoo manager commented "We didn't expect them to (become popular) so quickly. But by all means, we want everyone to come see them."

The Rock Hyrax enjoy feeding on such things as hay, komatsuna and sweet potatoes.

ケープハイラックスの双子の兄弟「エルモ」と「エース」＝川崎市夢見ケ崎動物公園

川崎市夢見ケ崎動物公園（同市幸区南加瀬）で、ひづめのある動物の中で最も小さい種類のケープハイラックスが４月28日に公開され、かわいらしい姿が人気を集めている。

ケープハイラックスはアフリカ南部に生息し、大きさはウサギと同じぐらいだが、ゾウやジュゴンなどに近いという。

広島市安佐動物園で２０１０年11月に生まれた双子の兄弟「エルモ」と「エース」を譲り受けた。

担当者は「すばしっこくて思わぬ動きをするところをぜひ見てほしい」と話している。

エサは、干し草や小松菜、サツマイモなど。

A wasabi marsh in Bodai, Hadano City

In Bodai, Hadano City, tea farmer Isamu Yamaguchi (54) cultivates wasabi in his marsh. The leaves can be seen growing out of the bright blue waters of the 7 are (700 square meter) marsh, stopping at a stone wall.

The name of Yamaguchi's store is Wasabiya. The family has been farming since the first half of the Meiji era. Because of the main river current strenuously flowing into the wasabi marsh, it was in the process of being destroyed. Yamaguchi commented "If possible, I would like to offer scenery of the beautiful water as a way of enhancing the image of Hadano city."

秦野市菩提のワサビ沢

秦野市菩提、茶農家山口勇さん（54）のワサビ沢で、ワサビの栽培が行われている。石垣で区切られた７アールの沢には青々とした葉が育っている。

山口家の屋号は「わさびや」。明治前半から栽培を始めたとされている。主流の茶栽培に本腰を入れたため、ワサビ沢は荒廃しつつあった。15、16年前、家族でかつての風景を取り戻そうと、石垣整備などに取り組んだ。

一定の収穫を上げる時期もあったが、サワガニなどの食害で思うように生育は進んでいない。この春先には種類を増やし苗を植え、来春以降の収穫を待ち望んでいる。山口さんは「水がきれいな秦野のイメージアップに貢献できれば」と話している。

The American Navy's FA18 Super Hornet on display=The Atsugi Naval Air Facility

展示された米海軍のＦＡ18スーパーホーネット＝厚木基地

米海軍厚木基地（大和、綾瀬市）の一般開放「日米親善春まつり」が28日、行われた。同基地に配備された原子力空母「ジョージ・ワシントン」艦載機部隊に所属する戦闘攻撃機ＦＡ18Ｅスーパーホーネット、電子戦機ＥＡ18Ｇグラウラーなどのほか、海上自衛隊の哨戒機Ｐ３Ｃが地上展示された。

今回は米海兵隊の輸送ヘリＣＨ46も登場。隊員は「沖縄の普天間基地から展示のために飛来した」と話し、東日本大震災後のトモダチ作戦での被災地支援を写真パネルで紹介した。

グラウンドでは基地関係者がホットドッグやハンバーガーを売る模擬店がずらり。茶道を学ぶ軍人の家族は着物姿でお茶を振る舞った。天候にも恵まれ、大勢の航空ファンや家族連れでにぎわった。
